張公洞

Zhanggong Cave is a 4A-rated karst limestone cave on Mengfeng Hill southwest of Yixing, the county-level city administered by Wuxi, and one of the best-known of the celebrated "Three Caves of Yixing" alongside Shanguan Cave and Linggu Cave. The site has been a recognized destination since the late imperial era, and its combination of unusual geology, Daoist religious associations, and natural cool has long made it one of the more distinctive natural attractions in the wider Wuxi area.

Inside, the cave is best known for its "cave within a cave" structure, a layered geological formation in which chambers open into one another at different levels, creating a more complex interior than a simple single-tunnel cave. Stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations fill the chambers, lit for visitors and given evocative names drawn from Chinese mythology and folklore. The cave maintains a cool, stable temperature year-round, which historically made it a popular place to escape the summer heat of the Yangtze lowlands, and it remains a particular draw during the hottest months.

Beyond its geological interest, Zhanggong Cave sits within a landscape of Daoist religious significance. The surrounding hillside has long been associated with Daoist practice, and the nearby Dongling Guan temple offers visitors a place for prayer and offerings, tying the cave into a broader religious and cultural itinerary in the area. The name "Zhanggong" itself points to this layer of history, linking the cave to the legendary Daoist immortal Zhang Guolao in local tradition.

A typical visit takes an hour or two, including the cave itself and the surrounding hillside temple and trails, and the cave is best visited as part of a wider Yixing itinerary alongside the area's other karst caves, its bamboo forests, and its famous purple clay teapot workshops. Because Yixing sits well to the southwest of central Wuxi, the cave works best as part of a dedicated day trip rather than as a stop folded into a city or Tai Lake itinerary, and its cool interior makes it a particularly attractive option during the warmer months.
