The Beihai Wetlands, located about twelve kilometers northeast of Tengchong's urban core, are a rare volcanic-dammed lake wetland and one of only a handful of floating-mat wetlands of this type in China. Formed roughly six hundred thousand years ago when volcanic eruptions blocked a river valley, the wetlands combine open water, floating grass mats, surrounding forest, and rich bird life into a layered ecosystem that has become one of the most popular natural excursions from Tengchong.
