甘坑古鎮

Gankeng Hakka Town is a restored historic village in the Buji subdistrict of Shenzhen's Longgang district, one of the most accessible places in the city to encounter the architectural and cultural heritage of the Hakka people — the historically migrant Han Chinese group whose settlements are scattered across the hills of southern China.

The village's documented history stretches back more than three hundred and fifty years, to a period when successive waves of Hakka settlers moved into the Buji valley to farm the narrow land between the low ridges of the Longgang hills. The oldest surviving structures, including ancestral halls, watchtowers, and the distinctive Hakka enclosed-village housing form known as the weilongwu, date from this early settlement phase.

In the 2010s, under a master plan developed by the Peking University research institute, the village was repositioned as a cultural-tourism destination focused on its Hakka heritage. The narrow lanes of the old village were restored, historic buildings were converted into small museums, galleries, craft workshops, and guesthouses, and the surrounding fields were repurposed as agricultural-experience plots and water-garden landscapes. In 2014 the village served as a main venue for the China International Cultural Industries Fair, giving national exposure to its Hakka-culture framing.

The visitor experience today mixes the old restored village — ancestral halls, watchtowers, lantern displays, and Hakka residential architecture — with newer additions including Hakka restaurants, tea houses, cultural exhibitions, and seasonal festivals. A small number of inns and boutique hotels allow overnight stays, and the Longgang location makes the town an easy half-day or full-day trip from central Shenzhen.

For international travellers, Gankeng Hakka Town is one of the best places in Shenzhen to see the city's pre-Special Economic Zone heritage. The Hakka story is a useful corrective to the popular framing of Shenzhen as a city with no history, and the restored village offers a more contemplative contrast to the dense urban districts of the Pearl River Delta.
