紹興柯岩風景区

Keyan Scenic Area is a 4A-rated historic site at the foot of Mount Ke, west of central Shaoxing, integrating three connected zones: the Keyan stone quarries, Jianhu Lake, and the recreated period town of Lu Zhen. The site is among the most comprehensive single destinations for understanding the landscape, craft, and literary traditions of the Shaoxing region, and it is typically visited as a relaxed full-day trip from the old city.

The Keyan zone forms the core of the scenic area. The landscape here is the result of more than a thousand years of stone quarrying, beginning in the Three Kingdoms period, which left behind a surreal terrain of vertical stone shafts, deep pools, caverns, and exposed cliff faces. The most celebrated individual features are the Heavenly Works Great Buddha, a Maitreya statue carved directly into the quarry face over the course of three generations of stonemasons during the Sui dynasty, and the Cloud Bone Stone, a thirty-meter inverted-pyramid formation whose top is wider than its four-meter base yet has stood in place for over a millennium. A network of paved paths connects these signature features to the Mirror Water Bay, the Yuezhong Famous Scholars Garden, and the Yuanshan Garden.

The Jianhu Lake zone is the second component of the visit. Jianhu, long considered the "mother lake" of Shaoxing, was historically central to the region's rice-wine brewing industry and to its hydraulic engineering. Four scenic clusters line its shore: the Eastern Han Flute Pavilion, the South Lake Autumn Waterscape, the Five Bridges Moon Walk, and the Calabash Wine Island, where visitors can sample yellow rice wine and watch demonstrations of the brewing culture for which Shaoxing is famous. Wupeng boat rides on the lake provide a slower perspective on the surrounding landscape.

The Lu Zhen zone is a recreated Jiangnan town built to evoke the fictional setting of Lu Xun's stories, with actors playing characters such as Ah Q and Xianglin Sao in the streets, period shopfronts, and a dual-sided opera stage. Together, the three zones cover the pre-modern stoneworking tradition, the lacustrine agricultural economy, and the literary imagination that have shaped the Shaoxing region, making Keyan one of the most concentrated introductions to eastern Zhejiang's cultural geography.
