香巴拉時輪壇城文化博覧センターについて

The Shambhala Kalachakra Mandala Cultural Exhibition Center is a multi-story Tibetan cultural complex near the heart of Shangri-La, dedicated to the Kalachakra (Wheel of Time) tradition, one of the most esoteric teaching cycles of Tibetan Buddhism and a tradition with strong ties to the myth of Shambhala from which the city takes its name.

The building is laid out as a vertical progression through the layers of the Kalachakra cosmology. Lower floors introduce the outer cosmos, the elemental structure, the celestial cycles, the geographical schemes that Tibetan scholars developed over centuries, while upper floors move inward to the mandala itself, a three-dimensional model of the cosmic palace of the deity. The centerpiece is a finely detailed mandala preserved under glass, accompanied by panels that explain the symbolism of each ring, gate, and deity.

Other exhibits cover Tibetan medicine, calendrical calculation, astrology, and the history of Shangri-La as a name borrowed from James Hilton's Lost Horizon and then officially adopted by the city in 2001. A multimedia hall presents short films on the major Tibetan Buddhist monasteries of the region, including Ganden Sumtseling and the great Kham-period centers beyond the prefectural border.

For travelers with limited exposure to Tibetan Buddhism, the center offers one of the most compact introductions in the city, and the mandala alone is worth the visit. The exhibition is roofed and climate-controlled, which makes it a good choice for the cold and rainy afternoons that are common on the high plateau. Allow about two hours for a thorough visit, and consider combining it with a walk through nearby Dukezong or a sunset visit to the Giant Prayer Wheel above the old town.
