The Huangpu River is often called Shanghai's mother river, and with good reason: it's the waterway around which the entire city took shape, and it still forms the dividing line between the city's two defining halves. On its western bank sits Puxi, home to the historic Bund and the old city center, while its eastern bank holds Pudong, anchored by the glittering Lujiazui financial district. Nearly every major Shanghai landmark sits along, or takes its meaning from, this stretch of water.

The river's role goes beyond geography. For much of Shanghai's modern history, the Huangpu was the reason the city became a major trading port in the first place, and the contrast visible along its banks today, century-old stone buildings on one side, futuristic towers on the other, is essentially a visual timeline of the city's transformation. Watching the river at night, when both banks are lit up and reflected in the water, is widely considered one of the essential Shanghai experiences, and it's often the single image visitors associate most with the city.

There are several ways to experience the river, from simply walking along the promenades on either bank to boarding one of the many cruise boats that depart from docks such as Shiliupu Wharf for scenic trips up and down the water. A short walk along the riverside paths costs nothing and can be done at any time, while a cruise offers a more complete view of both skylines from the middle of the water, particularly rewarding after dark. Either way, most visitors find that even thirty minutes by the river is enough to appreciate why it holds such a central place in the city's identity.

Given its central position, the Huangpu River naturally threads through almost any Shanghai itinerary rather than standing as a single isolated stop. It connects The Bund, Lujiazui, and the old city center, making it easy to build a day around walking or cruising along the water and letting the river guide the route between other nearby attractions.
