南山海上観音について

The Guanyin of Nanshan is a one-hundred-and-eight-meter-tall statue of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, standing on a lotus throne on a reclaimed island in the sea just off the coast of the Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone. Visible for miles along the Sanya shoreline, it is one of the tallest Guanyin statues in the world and has become one of the most iconic images of southern Hainan. For visitors to the cultural zone, the statue is both the visual landmark and the spiritual centerpiece of the site.

The statue is unique in its three-faced form, with three separate depictions of Guanyin integrated into a single figure, each face pointing in a different direction. Each of the three faces carries its own iconographic detail, showing the bodhisattva holding different symbolic objects and conveying different aspects of the Guanyin's compassionate role in Mahayana Buddhist tradition. The effect, viewed from any single angle on land or sea, is of a calm, forward-facing figure, but moving around the statue reveals that each side is a distinct devotional image in its own right.

The statue stands on a broad lotus throne, which in turn sits on a platform built on a reclaimed island connected to the mainland by a short causeway. Visitors approach the statue along the causeway, then climb through the pedestal, which contains additional shrines, halls, and devotional spaces. The interior program is rich and detailed, with Buddhist art, sutra displays, and areas for offering and contemplation, and the pedestal is large enough that it functions almost as a temple in its own right.

Outside, the setting amplifies the impact of the statue. The reclaimed island sits in open sea, with the South China Sea stretching to the horizon and the coastline of southern Hainan visible behind, so the figure reads against a vast, open backdrop of water and sky. The interplay of tropical light on the white surface of the statue changes dramatically through the day, with early morning and late afternoon offering the most striking views.

The Guanyin of Nanshan is accessed as part of a visit to the wider Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone, which sits on Sanya's southern coast. The cultural zone is roughly forty minutes from downtown Sanya by road, and most visitors combine the statue with a visit to Nanshan Temple and the surrounding gardens and pavilions in a single day trip. For anyone interested in Buddhist art, monumental sculpture, or simply one of the most distinctive visual sights on the Chinese coast, the statue is a highlight of a Sanya itinerary.
