May Fourth Square is a large seafront plaza on the southern coast of Qingdao's eastern downtown, named for the May Fourth Movement of 1919, a defining moment in modern Chinese nationalism that was triggered in part by the transfer of German concessions in Shandong to Japan after the First World War. The square is one of the city's most prominent public spaces and the most concentrated expression of Qingdao's connection to that historical event.

The plaza's visual centerpiece is the sculpture "Wind of May," a flame-red spiraling form that has become one of the most recognizable images of contemporary Qingdao. Set on a broad paved axis facing the sea, the sculpture is framed by manicured lawns, fountains, and tree-lined promenades that connect the municipal government district to the north with the Fushan Bay waterfront to the south. From the seaward edge of the square, the view extends across the bay to the lighthouse on the opposite shore and to the masts of the Olympic Sailing Center, both of which feature prominently in long-exposure night photography.

The square is most active in the evening, when local residents and visitors gather along the waterfront to escape the heat of the Shandong summer, watch the sunset behind the harbor, and photograph the illuminated skyline. The adjacent coastal promenade links directly with the Olympic Sailing Center to the east and the Haitian Center and Cloud on Haitian observation deck, making it possible to walk the full length of the modern downtown seafront in a single relaxed loop.

For international visitors, May Fourth Square functions less as a stand-alone destination than as the central node of the eastern seafront, anchoring a half-day walk that includes the Sailing Center, the modern shopping and dining district, and a sunset view back toward the historic old town. Its location makes it an easy addition to any itinerary focused on Qingdao's contemporary cityscape.
