西山風景名勝区

The Western Hills Scenic Area, rising along the western shore of Dianchi Lake, is the most important mountain-park destination within easy reach of central Kunming and offers the most celebrated panoramic views over the lake and the city. The range is a long, forested escarpment that stretches for many kilometers along the lake's western edge, and its highest ridges — known by names such as Longmen and Huating — have been developed over centuries as a site of Buddhist worship, scholarly retreat, and scenic appreciation.

The signature landmark of the Western Hills is the Longmen Grottoes, a sequence of Buddhist sculptures and shrines carved directly into the cliff face of the peak, including a large statue of a Daoist deity laboriously chiseled from the living rock by generations of artisans. The grottoes are reached by a steep, narrow path that climbs along the cliff edge, with the drop to the lake visible below, and the combination of sculpture, geology, and exposure gives the route a dramatic character that makes it one of the most memorable single experiences in Kunming. Elsewhere on the hillside sit older Buddhist temples — Huating and Taihua among them — whose halls, gardens, and old trees provide quieter stops along the climb.

For foreign visitors, the Western Hills are the single most rewarding half-day or full-day excursion from central Kunming, and the view from the Longmen ridge over Dianchi Lake and the city beyond is among the most iconic single vistas in southwest China. The site is most easily reached via the cable car that runs from the eastern shore of Dianchi across the water to the hillside, though the ride is optional and the hills can also be climbed from below on foot. A visit typically fills a half-day, with the cable car ascent, the Longmen grottoes circuit, and the temple stops together filling a morning or afternoon. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions, while winter mornings can be cold but often deliver the clearest views across the lake.
