The Assistant General's Residence, known in Chinese as the Youji Jiangjun Fu, is a restored Ming dynasty courtyard compound inside Jiayuguan Fort that once served as the office and living quarters of the guerrilla general, the senior military officer who commanded the garrison of this remote Gansu frontier post. First built during the Longqing reign of the Ming dynasty, the compound became, across the Ming and Qing, the administrative center from which the defense and daily affairs of Jiayuguan were managed.
