雷峰塔

Leifeng Pagoda, also known as the Yellow Consort's Pagoda, stands atop Leifeng hill on the southern shore of West Lake and is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Hangzhou. For many visitors, the pagoda carries a stronger emotional pull than its silhouette alone would suggest, because it is bound up with one of the most beloved of all Chinese legends.

The pagoda is inseparable from the story of the White Snake, the romance between a supernatural snake spirit and a human man that is among the four great folktales of China. In the legend's most familiar form, the broken snake spirit Bai Suzhen is imprisoned beneath Leifeng Pagoda, and it is this association, more than any architectural detail, that draws generations of visitors to the spot.

The original pagoda collapsed in 1924, and the present structure is a modern reconstruction built on the original foundations. Unlike its predecessor, the new pagoda is equipped with modern conveniences including an elevator and air conditioning, which make the upper levels accessible to visitors who could not otherwise manage the climb and which set it apart from purely historic towers elsewhere.

From the upper galleries, the views open out across West Lake to the hills beyond, and the pagoda serves as one of the best elevated vantage points on the southern shore, particularly around sunset, when the light over the lake and the silhouette of the hills come together in a scene that has been admired for centuries.
