北京路歩行街について

Beijing Road Pedestrian Street, running through the very center of Guangzhou, is the city's primary downtown shopping and strolling avenue and the place where many visitors begin to get a feel for the modern Cantonese metropolis. Though compact in length, it occupies ground that historians regard as the cradle of the original settlement, making it a link between the contemporary city and its deepest past.

The avenue functions as the commercial heart of Guangzhou, lined with department stores, brand boutiques, restaurants, and snack shops that draw a constant flow of shoppers and sightseers from morning until late evening. Its energy reflects the trading culture for which the city has been famous for centuries, now expressed in the glass and signage of a modern retail street.

Beneath the surface of the modern avenue, however, lies a remarkable archaeological record. Excavations along Beijing Road uncovered the layered roadbeds and artifacts of successive dynasties, evidence that this same ground has been a main street of the city for many hundreds of years, and some of these findings are preserved under glass panels for visitors to view as they walk.

This combination of active commerce and visible ancient archaeology gives Beijing Road a character unlike more purely modern shopping districts. To walk here is to move along a route that has been continuously used for that purpose for a span of time that is difficult to grasp from the surface alone.

For visitors wanting to anchor their exploration of Guangzhou in the place where the city effectively began, Beijing Road Pedestrian Street is the natural starting point, a bustling commercial avenue that happens also to be one of the oldest streets in all of southern China.
