Prince Dai's Palace (Daiwangfu) is a reconstructed Ming-dynasty princely compound within the old city of Datong, built on the site of the original residence of Zhu Gui, the thirteenth son of the Hongwu Emperor, who was enfeoffed as the Prince of Dai and posted to this strategically critical frontier garrison in the late fourteenth century. The original palace complex was one of the most impressive princely residences in northern China before its destruction, and its modern reconstruction has become one of the headline elements of Datong's broader old-city revitalization program.

The historical significance of the site is substantial. Datong, positioned near the Yanmen Pass and the Mongolian frontier, was one of the most important military outposts of the early Ming dynasty, and the Prince of Dai was given responsibility for a sector of the northern defense system. The presence of a senior imperial prince in the city shaped its growth throughout the Ming period, and the palace compound — together with the famous Nine-Dragon Wall that originally served as its spirit screen — was the architectural centerpiece of the old city for centuries.

The reconstructed palace that visitors see today is part of the broader Datong Ancient City restoration initiative. The complex aims to evoke the scale, plan, and architectural style of a high-ranking Ming princely residence, with great halls, gateways, courtyards, and gardens arranged along a central axis. The reconstruction draws on historical records, comparable surviving Ming princely compounds elsewhere in China, and the archaeological evidence from the site itself.

For travelers, Prince Dai's Palace is best visited as part of a walking circuit through the Datong Ancient City, which also takes in the adjacent Nine-Dragon Wall, Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, and the city wall. Because the complex is a modern reconstruction rather than a surviving medieval monument, visitors with deep interest in authentic Liao, Jin, or Ming architecture may find the nearby Huayan and Shanhua temples more rewarding. However, as a piece of interpretive architecture, the palace gives a strong sense of the scale and grandeur of a Ming frontier princely establishment.
