淹城遺跡公園

The Yancheng Ruins Park, located in the Wujin district of Changzhou, preserves one of the most unusual archaeological sites in eastern China, the remains of a city built during the Spring and Autumn period more than two and a half thousand years ago. Sitting alongside the themed attractions of the Spring and Autumn Yancheng Tourism Area, the ruins park is the genuine historical core of the complex, where the actual earthworks of the ancient settlement are preserved and interpreted for visitors. For anyone interested in ancient Chinese history, it is the single most significant site in the Changzhou area.

The ruins are remarkable for their layout, a rare three-walled, three-moated design in which concentric earth walls and three rings of water form nested enclosures around a central inner city. Viewed from above, the plan reads as a series of interlocking rings, a form almost without parallel among surviving ancient Chinese sites. Walking paths follow the tops of the old earthworks and cross the moats at several points, with interpretive signage explaining the history of the city, its place in the Spring and Autumn political landscape, and what archaeologists have uncovered about daily life there. The site is also a pleasant public park, with mature trees and grassy banks softening the ancient earthworks.

A visit works best as a slow walk rather than a search for monumental architecture, since the remains are earthwork and landscape rather than standing buildings. Allow an hour or two for a full circuit, longer if you want to read the signage in detail or sit by the moats. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, when the paths are shaded and the ground is dry, and weekdays are quieter than weekends, when the site shares its parking and facilities with the neighboring theme park.

The Yancheng Ruins Park is the historical anchor of the entire Spring and Autumn Yancheng complex, and for travelers with any interest in ancient China it is more rewarding than the more commercial attractions next door. Authentic, atmospheric, and genuinely ancient, it is the clearest window in the Changzhou region onto the deep past of the lower Yangtze.
