Hebei Wind-and-Percussion Music (Funing)

Hebei wind-and-percussion music is a folk instrumental tradition of eastern Hebei handed down through generations, with Qinhuangdao's Funing County as its chief filing locality; it entered the first national ICH list in 2006. Rooted in the weddings, funerals and seasonal festivals of the eastern Hebei countryside, it has been passed orally by folk "drum-and-music troupes" for centuries.

Its performance is led by the suona, accompanied by sheng, guan and flute together with drum, cymbal and gong; the repertoire is rich, the technique demanding, able to imitate human voice and birdsong, at once bright and piercing yet also graceful and subtle, often heard at weddings, funerals and temple processions.

Hebei wind-and-percussion music carries the rites and emotions of eastern Hebei folk life and forms an important branch of Chinese traditional wind-and-percussion music, holding real value for the study of how northern folk instrumental music evolved and functions in society.
