Origin

Shawan piaose is a traditional folk parade of the Shawan area in Guangzhou's Panyu, staged at festival times.

The art form

Children costumed as opera characters are held by concealed iron supports so they appear to 'float' in mid-air on decorated platforms carried in procession — a feat of ingenious staging.

Cultural significance

Shawan piaose is provincial-level intangible cultural heritage and a representative of Lingnan folk parade art.
