Chinese Sericulture and Silk Craftsmanship
PCI national · ᵉ listeOrigine
Chinese sericulture and silk craftsmanship spans mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, reeling, dyeing and weaving along with their folk customs, profoundly shaping Chinese civilization and the Silk Road. It was jointly nominated in 2009 by Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Sichuan.
La forme artistique
Hangzhou's representative fabrics, such as Hangluo gauze-silk, are woven of pure mulberry silk in plain and leno weaves with evenly spaced openings—smooth, sheer and supple; the Hangluo weaving technique is itself national ICH.
Importance culturelle
Inscribed on UNESCO's representative list in 2009, the tradition marks Hangzhou as a key center of China's silk culture.
Où en faire l'expérience
The China Silk Museum is the lead institution for the inscription and its display and transmission.
