À propos de Site de la forteresse du Buffle de pierre à Pingjiang
The Pingjiang Shiniuzhai Scenic Area, located in Pingjiang County in the northeast of the greater Yueyang region, is one of the most dramatic Danxia-landform destinations in Hunan Province. Situated at the junction of Hunan, Hubei, and Jiangxi provinces, this 4A-rated park combines red-sandstone cliffs, a deep gorge, a famous glass bridge, and the remains of a mountain stronghold that has watched over the frontier zone for more than six centuries. For international travelers willing to travel outside the city of Yueyang itself, Shiniuzhai is one of the most visually rewarding day trips in the region.
The park takes its name from a large rock formation on the western side of the mountain that resembles a resting ox — "Shiniu" means "stone ox" — and this distinctive shape has given the site its name since at least the late imperial period. The Danxia geology produces the characteristic combination of vertical red cliffs, narrow gorges, natural arches, and table-top summits that define this type of landscape, and the colors are at their most vivid in the soft light of early morning and late afternoon, when the sandstone glows deep red and orange.
The historical layer of the site is equally rich. The mountain was used as a military stronghold in the late Yuan dynasty, when a local rebel leader led his forces up the mountain and built a stockade — "zhai" — at the summit, and the site has been known as Shiniuzhai ever since. Traces of the original stockade, defensive walls, and paths carved into the cliff face are still visible, and the historical association with resistance and frontier life gives the park a deeper resonance beyond its scenic appeal.
For modern visitors, the signature experience is the park's glass bridge, one of the earlier and most photographed high-altitude glass spans in Hunan, which stretches across the main gorge and offers straight-down views of the canyon floor. Additional activities include cliff walks, cable cars, climbing routes, and hiking trails of varying difficulty. For international visitors based in Yueyang, Shiniuzhai is a full-day trip — the drive from the city is substantial — and is best suited to travelers who enjoy hiking, dramatic geology, and the physical experience of high-altitude walkways. Bring sturdy shoes, layered clothing, and a head for heights.
