Musée des tombeaux des Xia occidentaux

The Western Xia Mausoleum Museum sits at the eastern foot of Helan Mountain in Yinchuan's Xixia District, directly within the Western Xia Mausoleums scenic area, and serves as the primary interpretive center for the royal cemetery complex. Opened to the public in 2019, the museum was purpose-built to help visitors understand the Tangut Western Xia dynasty (1038–1227) before they walk among the mausoleums themselves, and for most international travelers it is the single best place to make sense of this vanished empire.

The building's architecture is deliberately somber and monumental, designed to echo the silhouette of Helan Mountain behind it and to feel integrated with the vast open plain of the mausoleum site. Covering roughly 9,000 square meters, the museum is laid out to lead visitors chronologically through the rise, golden age, and destruction of the Western Xia state, with displays on the Tangut writing system, Buddhist art, administrative institutions, military organization, and court life. The presentation balances artifacts, graphic panels, multimedia installations, and immersive scene reconstructions.

The core collection includes items recovered from the mausoleum complex and other Western Xia sites across Ningxia and neighboring regions. Visitors can see fragments of Tangut-script steles, glazed roof tiles and ridge ornaments that once decorated the imperial tombs, Buddhist statues, ceramics, and weapons. One of the most affecting exhibits focuses on the Tangut script itself — a complex logographic writing system created specifically for the Western Xia court, which was lost for centuries after the Mongol destruction of the empire and only partially reconstructed by modern scholars.

The museum also devotes significant space to the conservation history of the mausoleums, explaining the challenges of preserving rammed-earth structures in a desert environment, the ongoing archaeological work at the site, and the role of international collaboration in decoding Tangut-language texts. For international visitors, the museum is best visited before walking through the mausoleums themselves, because the context transforms what might otherwise look like silent earthen mounds into the readable ruins of a sophisticated civilization. Most travelers spend about an hour inside before continuing out to the mausoleum park — a sequence that is essential for appreciating both.
