À propos de Pavillon aux pandas de Xining

The Xining Panda House is one of the largest single-structure giant panda enclosures in China, and the highest-altitude panda exhibit in the country. Set into a forested slope on the grounds of Xining Wildlife Park in the western suburbs of the city, it is home to a small group of giant pandas and is one of the most popular family attractions in the Qinghai capital.

The enclosure was designed with the local climate and altitude in mind. Xining sits at around 2,275 meters on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau, with cool summers, cold winters, and dry highland air — conditions that are actually well suited to giant pandas, which evolved in the cool bamboo forests of the mountains of central China. The enclosure mimics that habitat: a circular building set into the hillside, partially wrapped around with vegetation, with indoor and outdoor viewing areas, water features, misting systems, climbing frames, and dense plantings of bamboo and native trees.

The architecture is striking. From the exterior, the building appears as a curved ribbon following the contour of the slope, with a green roof and timber-and-glass facades that blend into the surrounding forest. Inside, the viewing galleries are organized around a series of glass-walled panda enclosures, with educational displays on giant panda biology, breeding, conservation, and the work of China's panda research program.

For most visitors, the appeal is straightforward: pandas are charismatic animals, and the Xining Panda House offers a more intimate viewing experience than the larger panda bases at Chengdu or Wolong, with smaller crowds and a quieter setting. The site is particularly popular with Chinese families, and on weekends and holidays the queue for the main viewing gallery can be long.

For independent foreign travelers, the Panda House is a worthwhile half-day stop on a Xining itinerary, particularly for families with children or for travelers who will not be visiting the panda bases in Sichuan. Combine it with the wider Xining Wildlife Park, where the focus is on the high-altitude fauna of the plateau — snow leopards, Pallas's cats, black-necked cranes — for a complete day of animal viewing.

Practicalities: confirm feeding times and opening hours locally, and arrive early in the day when the pandas are most active.
