Rue du quartier Hui

The Muslim Quarter is not a single street but a historic neighborhood of narrow lanes at the heart of old Xi'an, home to the city's Hui Muslim community for several centuries. Centered around streets including Beiyuanmen, Xiyangshi, and Damaishi, the district sits just northwest of the Bell Tower and Drum Tower, and its identity has been shaped over generations by the intersection of Chinese and Islamic culture, most visibly reflected in the Great Mosque tucked among its lanes, one of the oldest and largest mosques in China, built in a distinctly Chinese architectural style rather than the domed forms seen elsewhere in the Islamic world.

Today the district is best known as the epicenter of Xi'an's street food scene, with narrow lanes packed shoulder to shoulder with vendors selling regional specialties, from hand-pulled noodles and lamb skewers to sweet persimmon cakes and savory flatbreads. Beyond the food, small shops selling spices, souvenirs, and local crafts line the streets, and older residential courtyards, some open to visitors, offer glimpses of the neighborhood's architecture beyond the main commercial lanes. The Great Mosque itself, reached down a quieter side lane, provides a calmer contrast to the surrounding bustle, its courtyards and halls built in traditional Chinese temple style rather than a more expected Middle Eastern design.

Evenings are by far the busiest and most atmospheric time to visit, as food stalls light up and the main lanes fill with both residents and visitors, though this also means the narrowest streets can become quite crowded, particularly on weekends. Visitors preferring a more relaxed pace, especially for browsing shops or visiting the mosque, may find late morning or early afternoon more comfortable, before the dinner rush sets in.

Given its central location adjacent to the Bell Tower and Drum Tower, the Muslim Quarter fits naturally at the end of a day spent exploring the old city, whether arriving hungry after a walk along the city wall or simply looking to sample Xi'an's famous street food culture. Allowing at least an hour or two for wandering, eating, and browsing gives enough time to take in both the food stalls and the quieter mosque grounds.
