Dîner-spectacle au Grand Bazar

The Grand Bazaar Song and Dance Dinner (Dabaza Gewu Wanyan) is a nightly stage-and-banquet program held inside the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar in Urumqi, Xinjiang. It combines a multi-course regional meal with a staged performance of music and dance drawn from across Xinjiang, and it is the most accessible single-evening introduction to the performing arts traditions of the region for visitors based in the city.

The program is held in a dedicated banquet hall on the upper floor of the bazaar complex. Seating is at long shared tables in a U-shape around a central stage, which allows the performers to move between choreographed set pieces and audience interaction without disrupting the meal service. The format is well suited to group tourism, and a significant share of the audience on any given night is composed of organized tour parties, but individual travelers can also reserve a seat.

The meal follows a set menu built around the standard festive repertoire of the region: naan, fresh fruit, lamb served in several preparations including skewers and a larger braised or roasted course, polo rice pilaf, hand-pulled noodles, and a closing service of melon and tea. Beverage service is typically limited to tea, juice, and soft drinks, and the timing of the courses is coordinated with the structure of the performance so that the meal and the show end together.

The performance program draws on the principal musical and dance traditions of Xinjiang, including the muqam repertoire recognized on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage, and presents them in shortened, choreographed form. Costumes, instrumentation, and the sequence of regional styles are designed to convey the variety of the region in a single hour of stage time, with a deliberate balance between Uyghur, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, and other regional repertoire.

For international travelers the dinner is best understood as a theatrical overview rather than an authentic ethnographic record, and it works well as an end-of-day wind-down after the city's museums and markets rather than as a primary destination in its own right. A typical evening runs for two to two and a half hours. Advance reservation is strongly recommended, since seats sell out in peak season, and visitors with dietary restrictions should confirm menu options when booking.
