À propos de Mont de l'Éléphant de Gangu

Gangu Daxiang Mountain, the "Great Elephant Mountain," is a Buddhist cave-temple and scenic ridge in Gangu County, west of Tianshui. Counted among the eight traditional scenes of Gangu and recognized as an important cultural relic site along the ancient Silk Road, it preserves a string of cave shrines, cliff carvings, and small temples along the crest of a steep, treeless ridge overlooking the Loess Plateau valleys.

The mountain takes its name from the silhouette of the ridge itself, which local tradition reads as the outline of a reclining elephant. Although the layout is similar in concept to the Daxiang Mountain Park on the western side of the county seat, Gangu Daxiang Mountain is treated as a distinct cultural property and is celebrated locally as one of the older Silk Road cave sites in southern Gansu.

Walking along the ridge, visitors pass a sequence of grottoes and small temple halls, some carved into the rock and others built onto ledges. The Buddhist statuary ranges across multiple dynastic periods, and several inscriptions record the patronage of regional officials and merchant families who traveled the trade routes that linked Gansu to the Hexi Corridor and beyond. The setting, exposed and breezy, gives a very different impression from the forested gorges around Maijishan.

For foreign travelers with time for a deeper exploration of Tianshui's religious landscape, Gangu Daxiang Mountain is a worthwhile detour. The ridge walk is the main experience, so bring sturdy shoes, sun protection, and water, particularly in summer. Visit with a local driver who can combine it with the Daxiang Mountain Park and, if time allows, the nearby Fuxi-themed sites in Gangu, which add a contrasting layer of prehistoric mythology to the day.
