À propos de Parc du mont du Grand Éléphant – temple rupestre
The Daxiang Mountain Park and its grotto temple complex sit on the western side of Gangu County, roughly two kilometers from the county seat and about an hour from central Tianshui. A 4A-rated scenic and religious site, it is one of several lesser-known Buddhist cave complexes that line the Silk Road corridor through southern Gansu, and it gives foreign travelers a quieter alternative to Maijishan with a different character.
The caves were first cut in the Northern Wei period and added to across later dynasties, making them contemporaneous in origin with the earliest work at Maijishan and Yungang. The principal attraction is a large stone Buddha carved into the mountainside and approached through a sequence of terraces, prayer halls, and staircases. The site's Chinese name, "Great Image Mountain," refers directly to this figure, which has been the focus of local pilgrimage for centuries.
Beyond the Buddhist caves, the mountain carries a second, distinct layer of cultural meaning. Gangu is traditionally associated with the mythology of Fuxi, and several spots on the upper slopes are linked to that legend. As a result, a visit weaves together Buddhist worship, folk cosmology, and views over the Loess Plateau valleys, a combination that captures how Silk Road religion folded into local tradition rather than replacing it.
For a self-guided traveler, Daxiang Mountain is best treated as a half-day excursion from Tianshui, ideally with a local driver. The climb involves stairs and some elevation. Bring water, especially in the dry summer months. The site sees fewer international visitors than Maijishan, so a translation app and a willingness to explore independently are useful. Pause at the upper terraces for the broad view over the county and surrounding hills.
