The Calligraphy Sage Native Place is a historic district at the foot of Jishan Hill in central Shaoxing, dedicated to the memory of Wang Xizhi, the fourth-century calligrapher universally honored in the Chinese tradition as the "sage of calligraphy." Wang lived in this neighborhood for several decades during the Eastern Jin dynasty, and the area preserves the lanes, courtyard houses, and canal-side settings that defined his daily life, even as the buildings themselves date mostly from later dynasties.

The district is an open network of public streets rather than a walled tourist site. White-walled, grey-tiled courtyard houses line the lanes, with traditional shopfronts, small temples, academies, and family residences mixing residential and commercial use. Several points of reference are tied directly to the legends of Wang Xizhi: the former site of the Jiezhu Temple, where he was said to have lived; the Dyed Fan Bridge, associated with the story of Wang inscribing fans for an elderly peddler; and the small Fan Workshop Lane. Inscriptions and plaques along the lanes mark these locations and explain their literary significance for visitors familiar with the Wang Xizhi legend.

Beyond the calligraphic associations, the district is one of the most atmospheric neighborhoods in central Shaoxing. The canals, stone bridges, and rows of taimen houses create the same intimate Jiangnan atmosphere that characterizes the city's other historic quarters, but with fewer crowds and a quieter, more residential character than the better-known Lu Xun Native Place a few blocks to the south. Small cafes, craft workshops, and snack stalls occupy some of the frontages, but the overall feeling remains that of a neighborhood rather than a curated attraction.

For international visitors, the Calligraphy Sage Native Place is best visited as part of a walking tour of central Shaoxing, ideally combined with the Cangqiao Straight Street to the west and the Bazi Bridge area to the east. The district is freely accessible at any time, and travelers with an interest in Chinese calligraphy, classical literature, or pre-modern urbanism will find it particularly rewarding. Most visits last between one and two hours, with the option of a longer stop for tea or a meal in one of the canal-side establishments.
