Les Huit Grandes Passes

Badaguan is a historic villa quarter on Qingdao's southern coast, named after the strategic mountain passes of the Great Wall that once gave its bordering avenues their names. Laid out during the city's early twentieth-century expansion under German and subsequent Republican-era administration, the neighborhood has been preserved as a leafy garden district of low-rise mansions, with pavements shaded by plane trees and lanes that terminate in views of the Yellow Sea.

The quarter is celebrated among architecture enthusiasts for the diversity of its building styles. More than two hundred villas, designed over several decades by European, Japanese, and Chinese architects, represent a catalog of revival styles including Tudor, Bavarian chalet, Russian Orthodox, Mediterranean stucco, and Moderne, sometimes described by locals as "a museum of world architecture." Many of the houses are now used as guesthouses, sanatoriums, cultural institutions, or official reception venues, and although most interiors remain closed to the public, the exteriors along paths such as Shanhaiguan Road, Juyongguan Road, and Jiaxing Road reward unhurried exploration.

Badaguan opens directly onto Qingdao's bathing beaches, including the Second and Third Bathing Beaches, and the forested hillside of Taipingshan rises immediately behind it, making the area unusually rich for a single outing. The combination of forested lanes, sand coves, and views toward the offshore islands gives the district a quieter, more residential character than the city's busier squares to the east.

For international visitors, Badaguan is best approached as a walking district rather than a single-ticket attraction. The quarter sits within easy reach of Zhanqiao Pier and the old German Governor's Residence, and it forms the most concentrated surviving expression of Qingdao's pre-war architectural identity, making it an essential stop on any itinerary focused on the city's colonial-era heritage.
