Musée de Nanjing

The Nanjing Museum, set into the southern foot of Purple Mountain just inside the old Zhongshan city gate, is one of the largest and most important museums in China and the principal museum of the lower Yangtze region. Temporary exhibitions regularly draw major loans from other institutions across China.

For foreign visitors, the Nanjing Museum rewards a generous block of time rather than a quick stop, since the sheer scale of the collections means a rushed visit tends to leave the highlights unseen. A half-day is a reasonable minimum, and even that only allows for selective attention to the galleries that align with a visitor's interests. English labeling is present at the section level and improving in detail, though the sheer volume of objects means the experience still rewards visitors willing to focus on what catches their eye. The museum pairs naturally with a visit to the adjacent Ming city wall and the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum area further up the mountain, and it is worth checking the temporary exhibition schedule in advance, since major shows can significantly shape the visit.
