Mount Laojun Scenic Area is a mountain long associated with Taoist tradition, said in legend to be the place where Laozi, the traditional founder of Taoism, retreated in his later years to cultivate the philosophical and spiritual practices attributed to him. A temple honoring this connection was established on the mountain during the Northern Wei dynasty, and the peak was later given the honorific title of a renowned mountain under heaven, cementing its status as an important site of Taoist pilgrimage and worship that has drawn devotees for centuries.

The scenic area is characterized by dense forest cover, striking rock formations, and numerous mountain springs, creating a landscape that changes dramatically with the seasons. Autumn is particularly celebrated here, when the surrounding hillsides turn vivid shades of red and gold, making the mountain one of the most popular destinations in the region for viewing autumn foliage. After rainfall, clouds and mist frequently settle among the peaks, creating an ethereal, almost otherworldly atmosphere that has long inspired comparisons to a realm of Taoist immortals.

Given the mountain terrain, visitors should expect a fair amount of walking and, in some sections, significant elevation gain, with cable cars available in parts of the scenic area to ease the ascent. A full visit can take the better part of a day, and sturdy footwear along with weather-appropriate clothing is recommended, since conditions can shift quickly at altitude.

Because Mount Laojun lies outside central Luoyang, a visit typically requires a dedicated day trip, making it a rewarding option for travelers with extra time who want to pair the city's historic and cultural sites with a substantial natural and spiritual landscape experience.
