Téléphérique touristique de Kunming

The Kunming Tourist Cableway, originally known as the Dianchi–Western Hills cable car, is one of the most popular single rides in Kunming, carrying passengers from the eastern shore of Dianchi Lake up and across the water to the forested slopes of the Western Hills on the opposite bank. The cableway is unusual among Chinese sightseeing lifts in that roughly half of its length runs directly above the open water of the lake, making it both a lake-crossing and a mountain-climbing ride in a single trip.

The journey begins on the flat lakeside at the eastern edge of Dianchi and rises steadily as the cabin crosses the water, giving passengers an expanding view of the lake, the causeway along its northern shore, and the skyline of Kunming beyond. As the cable car approaches the western bank, the line rises more steeply up the forested slopes of the Western Hills, ending at an upper station that gives direct access to the hillside temples, walking trails, and the celebrated Longmen grottoes that make the Western Hills one of Kunming's signature destinations. The combination of lake crossing and mountain ascent, with the gradual transition of perspective from water level to ridge, is the defining feature of the experience.

For foreign visitors, the cableway is most commonly used as the ascent route for a Western Hills visit, replacing the steeper ground-level climb and giving the most dramatic single overview of Dianchi Lake available without hiking to a summit. A one-way ride up, combined with a tour of the Longmen grottoes and a descent on foot or by shuttle, makes for a classic half-day Western Hills itinerary. The ride is weather-dependent, with high winds occasionally halting operations, and the clearest views come on dry winter mornings, when the air over the lake is at its cleanest. Travelers with a fear of heights should consider their comfort before boarding, since the lake-crossing section is genuinely exposed, but for most visitors the cableway is one of the more enjoyable and photogenic single experiences in the Kunming area.
