À propos de Cantons de Jiuxiang
The Jiuxiang Scenic Area, located in the limestone hills roughly ninety kilometers east of central Kunming, is one of the two great karst-landscape destinations within easy day-trip range of the city, paired in local idiom with the Stone Forest in the saying "above ground, see the Stone Forest; below ground, see Jiuxiang." While the Stone Forest showcases the surface pinnacles of the karst, Jiuxiang reveals the underground equivalent: a vast network of limestone caves, underground rivers, waterfalls, and caverns that rank among the most extensive and dramatic cave systems in southwest China.
The cave system contains hundreds of interconnected chambers of varying size, and the scenic area has developed a route through the most spectacular sections, allowing visitors to walk through enormous cathedral-like caverns, past underground waterfalls whose roar echoes off the limestone walls, and along the banks of subterranean rivers that have carved the complex over geological time. The formations include the usual stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone of karst caves, but the scale of the individual chambers and the presence of running water give Jiuxiang a more dynamic, less static character than caves that are purely dry and decorated. The route incorporates both walking passages and short boat rides on the underground rivers, and the trip through the system ends with a cable car ride back to the entrance through the forested surface landscape above.
For foreign visitors, Jiuxiang is one of the most rewarding full-day excursions from Kunming, and it is often combined with the Stone Forest into a single longer day trip that takes in both the surface and underground dimensions of the regional karst landscape. A visit to Jiuxiang itself typically fills most of a day including the drive, and the underground route rewards comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket — the cave interior is cool and damp regardless of the weather outside — and a tolerance for enclosed spaces. Photography inside the caves is challenging but rewarding, particularly at the underground waterfall sections, and the contrast between the subterranean chambers and the open forested plateau at the surface gives the visit a satisfying variety.
