Parc du lac Verdoyant

Green Lake Park, known in Chinese as Cuihu, is the most beloved urban park in central Kunming, a ring of willow-lined lakes and walkways set in the heart of the old city just north of the major university district. The park is built around a series of connected lakes divided by causeways and small bridges, in conscious imitation of the layout of the celebrated West Lake in Hangzhou, and it functions as the principal green space where residents of central Kunming gather for morning exercise, weekend strolling, and the kind of informal social life that defines a livable Chinese city.

The park's atmosphere shifts with the seasons. In winter, the same migratory black-headed gulls that gather on Dianchi Lake descend on Green Lake in large numbers, turning the lakes into a swirl of white birds and drawing crowds of families who come to feed them. In spring and summer, the lakes bloom with lotus and other aquatic flowers, and the willows along the banks give the park a soft, southern-Chinese atmosphere. Throughout the year, the pavilions, tea houses, and open plazas host informal performances of local music, dance, and opera, giving the park a more active, participatory character than a purely ornamental garden.

For foreign visitors, Green Lake Park is the easiest place in Kunming to observe the daily life of the city at close range, and it rewards a slow, unhurried visit rather than a checklist approach. A typical walk through the park fills an hour or two, and the surrounding neighborhood — old streets, universities, teahouses, and the nearby Confucian temple site — gives the area a density of small attractions that can easily fill a half-day. The park is at its most photogenic during the winter gull season and during the summer lotus bloom, but it is pleasant year-round thanks to Kunming's mild climate, and the early morning hours, when locals gather for tai chi, dancing, and bird-walking, are particularly rewarding for travelers who want to experience the texture of contemporary urban Chinese life in an unforced, natural setting.
