Ancienne cité de Kashgar

Kashgar Ancient City is the historic core of one of the most famous oasis cities of the Silk Road, a sprawling traditional urban fabric of narrow lanes, courtyard houses, and craft workshops that has been continuously inhabited for centuries. As the cultural and architectural heart of Kashgar, the old city is the single most important destination for visitors to the region and one of the most distinctive urban environments in Central Asia. Walking its streets is the defining experience of any visit to the city.

The old city's layout reflects its origins as a Central Asian oasis settlement. Lanes wind irregularly between high earthen walls, opening unexpectedly into small squares, courtyards, and markets. The architecture is built around inward-facing courtyard houses, often decorated with carved wood, painted ceilings, and patterned tilework, with the street façades presenting a relatively austere face to the public lane. The street pattern itself is genuinely medieval in its complexity, and first-time visitors are likely to get lost, which is part of the point: the old city is meant to be explored at walking pace rather than navigated efficiently.

The craft traditions of the old city remain alive in its workshops. Metalworkers, woodcarvers, potters, carpet weavers, and makers of traditional musical instruments continue to practise in small ateliers throughout the district, often in spaces that have been used for the same craft for generations. Wandering the lanes, visitors encounter the sounds of hammering and the smells of freshly worked wood and metal, alongside the more recent additions of small cafes and tea houses catering to tourists. The combination of working craft and contemporary hospitality gives the area its present character.

For international visitors, Kashgar Ancient City is also familiar as a filming location: it stood in for Kabul in the film adaptation of The Kite Runner, and many of its streetscapes will be recognisable to viewers of that film. Beyond the cinematic association, the old city rewards at least a full day of unhurried walking, with breaks for tea, food, and people-watching. The early morning, before the tourist crowds build, is the most atmospheric time to wander. Comfortable shoes and a willingness to be lost are essential; a guide adds substantial context to the craft traditions and the architecture.
