Rivière Taolai

The Taolai River is the dramatic river gorge that runs along the southern edge of the Jiayuguan fortification system, and one of the most visually arresting natural features of the Gansu frontier landscape near Jiayuguan City. Passing close by the First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall, the river has carved a deep, sheer-walled canyon through the desert plateau, and standing at its edge visitors look down into a precipitous rocky gorge with a real sense of staring into a canyon abyss.

The Taolai River gorge is visited as part of the circuit taking in the First Beacon Tower and, more broadly, Jiayuguan Fort and the Overhanging Great Wall.
