Domaine viticole Zixuan

Zixuan Wine Chateau is a large wine estate and industrial-tourism destination in Jiayuguan City, set in the arid Gansu landscape and certified as a national 4A-level tourist attraction. Developed as part of the diversification of the regional iron and steel industry, the estate was conceived from the start as both a working winery and a visitor destination, combining serious wine production with European-inspired architecture and guided tours that introduce guests to the craft of Chinese winemaking in the northwest.

The scale of the operation is genuinely impressive. The estate covers a large area, with internationally sourced production equipment including presses, filtration systems, bottling lines, and oak barrels from France, Germany, Italy, and the United States, all housed in purpose-built facilities for pressing, fermentation, storage, and bottling. The centerpiece is a vast underground cellar, recognized as one of the largest single wine-cellaring spaces of its kind in Asia, where row upon row of barrels and bottles age in cool, dim quiet, and where visitors can see the full journey of wine from grape to bottle.

Tours are organized around the eight basic steps of winemaking, from harvest and destemming through fermentation, blending, and bottling, and they wind through the European-style grounds, the tasting rooms, and the cellar itself. For many international visitors, the most surprising part of the visit is simply discovering that a wine region exists out here at all, on the edge of the Gobi, sustained by meltwater from the Qilian Mountains and the long, sunny growing season of the Hexi Corridor.

The chateau makes an easy and relaxing half-day outing from Jiayuguan, and its themed grounds, complete with small leisure areas and a members' lounge, are pleasant for strolling and photography. Tastings allow visitors to sample the estate's range, and bottles make for distinctive souvenirs of a trip to northwest China.
