Cité interdite (enceinte intérieure)

The Inner City is the heart of Jiayuguan Fort, the great Ming dynasty stronghold that anchors the western end of the Great Wall near Jiayuguan City. While the outer walls and gatehouses of the fort are what most visitors first see, it is the Inner City that formed the secure core of the fortress, housing the command buildings, offices, and living quarters from which the garrison once governed this remote stretch of the Hexi Corridor frontier.

The walls of the Inner City rise to a height of about ten meters, with a lower section of tamped yellow earth topped by a parapet of sun-dried brick, and despite more than six centuries of wind and weather much of the masonry remains solid and intact. Walking the circuit on top of the ramparts gives a vivid sense of the engineering skill that went into the fortress, as well as commanding views across the wider fort complex, the Gobi Desert beyond, and the snow-capped Qilian range to the south.

Inside the enclosure, visitors can explore a handful of restored buildings, including official halls and a small temple, which together suggest the daily rhythm of a Ming frontier garrison. The contrast between the bare, wind-scoured walls and the carefully restored timber-and-tile interiors is striking, and it helps to imagine the fort as a living military community rather than merely a ruin. Signage and the adjacent Great Wall Museum help fill in the historical context for international visitors.

The Inner City is visited as part of the standard circuit through Jiayuguan Fort, so allow yourself time to climb onto the walls as well as wander through the courtyards below. Mornings and late afternoons offer the best light on the rammed-earth walls and fewer crowds than the middle of the day. For anyone interested in the Great Wall, Ming military architecture, or Silk Road history, the Inner City is the most atmospheric corner of one of China's most famous fortresses.
