Puits de l'Immortel

Xianren Well, the Immortal's Well, is a striking sea-erosion feature on Pingtan, the island area off the coast of Fuzhou. It sits within the East Sea Wonderland scenic area and is named for a deep, roughly circular shaft carved into the coastal rock, where the sea surges in through an underground channel and sends spray climbing up the steep walls. Together with Stone Tablet Yang and Haitan Heavenly God, it counts as one of the "three great strange rocks" of Pingtan, and it is a favorite stop for travelers exploring the island.

The well is essentially a natural skylight opened by the waves in the roof of a sea cave, leaving a vertical shaft rimmed by sheer cliffs that drop to churning seawater. When the swell runs high, the spray erupts from the opening in dramatic bursts, and the setting of black rock, white foam, and open ocean is genuinely spectacular. Local legend holds that immortals once cultivated themselves here, lending the place a layer of folklore, while the surrounding trail leads past more sea-carved formations and viewpoints over the rocky coast.

The walking path is well built but exposed, so sun protection and sturdy shoes are worth bringing, and you should keep back from the unfenced cliff edges when the waves are lively. Mornings tend to be calmer and less crowded, while holidays bring more domestic tour groups. A visit takes about an hour to an hour and a half, combined with the short trail through the neighboring rock formations.

Xianren Well sits on Pingtan's eastern shore alongside other coastal sights, so it combines naturally with Houyan Island, Tannan Bay, and the 68 Nautical Miles area into a full day of island exploration. For visitors drawn to unusual geology and wild seascapes, it is one of the most photogenic spots on Pingtan and a vivid example of the sea-eroded landscapes that define this corner of Fuzhou's coast.
