À propos de Porte orientale de la Cité du Xiangxi

The East Gate Tower of Xiangxi stands at the eastern edge of Fenghuang Ancient Town, facing the eastern hills and set close against the bank of the Tuo River. Originally named the Shenghengmen, or Gate of Rising Constancy, it was one of four gates that once guarded the old town, working together with the surviving north and south gate towers to protect the town below.

The current structure dates to 1715, during the Kangxi era of the Qing dynasty, and combines two building materials characteristic of Xiangxi fortifications: the upper portion of the gate tower is built from traditional grey brick, while the lower section is constructed from reddish sandstone quarried locally. The tower rises about eleven meters above the roadway, with a row of loopholes for defense set above the main gate opening and a two-story watchtower structure crowned with a traditional gabled roof and surrounding eaves, reflecting a level of craftsmanship well above simple military necessity. Inside, a statue of the historical general Guan Yu occupies the main hall, and more recent additions include a scale model of the old town's fortifications and a display of historic cannon.

Because the East Gate sits directly on Fenghuang's eastern edge, most visitors encounter it naturally while walking the riverside path or heading toward the rainbow bridge, making it easy to combine with other nearby sights rather than requiring a separate trip. Climbing to the tower's upper level, where accessible, offers a good vantage point over the surrounding rooftops and river, and the gate's combination of defensive history and river views makes it one of the more rewarding short stops for visitors tracing the outline of Fenghuang's old city walls.
