À propos de Ancienne cité de Hunyuan

Hunyuan Ancient City, the county seat of Hunyuan about seventy kilometers southeast of Datong, is a well-preserved historic town best known as the gateway to the Hanging Temple and to the North Mount Heng, but worth a stop in its own right for travelers interested in vernacular architecture, religious art, and the texture of everyday life in a northern Chinese market town. Compact, walkable, and far quieter than the headline destinations of the Datong region, it makes an excellent half-day complement to the more famous attractions nearby.

The core of the old town is a network of stone-paved lanes that connect the major historic sites. The two most significant are Yongan Temple — with its celebrated Yuan-dynasty water-and-land murals — and the Yuanjue Temple Brick Pagoda, an elegant Liao-style masonry tower whose bronze wind chimes, hung at each corner of each tier, give the surrounding streetscape a distinctive soundtrack on breezy days. Both monuments are recognized within the national cultural heritage system and are the main draws for serious cultural travelers.

The Yongan Temple murals deserve special attention. These dense, colorful assemblies of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, Daoist deities, demons, and human figures are one of the most complete surviving examples of the shuilu (water-land) mural tradition in north China. Hired guides can explain the complex iconography, which combines Buddhist, Daoist, and folk-religious elements in a single program of art designed for the universal salvation ritual. Even without context, the visual density and craftsmanship of the murals are unmistakable.

For travelers, Hunyuan is best visited as part of a day trip from Datong, paired with the nearby Hanging Temple and Mount Heng. The old town can be explored in two to three hours at a relaxed pace; comfortable walking shoes are important, since the stone lanes can be slippery, particularly in winter when ice forms. Local specialties, especially Hunyuan cold noodles, are worth seeking out, and the main street is lined with small shops and family-run eateries. Travelers should respect the fragile wall paintings in Yongan Temple by not touching the walls and by avoiding flash photography.
