Phalange idéale

"Ideal State" (Lixiangbang) is a striking white-walled resort and hospitality complex perched on a sea-facing cliff along the eastern shore of Erhai Lake, between the villages of Haishe and Shuanglang. Designed as a modern interpretation of a Mediterranean hill village, with pure-white staircase architecture cascading down the slope, archways, and drought-tolerant succulent plantings, it has become one of the most photographed and most polarizing recent additions to the Dali landscape.

The design concept centers on the idea of a "mountain-and-sea theater." Tiered terraces and stacked volumes follow the natural contours of the cliff, creating a sequence of outdoor rooms, staircases, and small plazas, all oriented toward the light on Erhai Lake. The interplay of Mediterranean architectural vocabulary — arches, domes, white-plastered walls — with the Yunnan light and the Cangshan backdrop gives the site its distinctive visual identity.

For travelers, Ideal State functions primarily as a destination for strolling, photography, coffee, and short stays. The complex hosts a number of boutique guesthouses, cafés, restaurants, and shops, and its public spaces are open to day visitors. The layered terraces catch the light at different angles throughout the day, making the early morning and late afternoon particularly photogenic. Views back toward Shuanglang and across the lake to the Cangshan range are among the most dramatic available anywhere on the east bank.

Ideal State has drawn both admiration and criticism — for some travelers it is a captivating piece of contemporary design, for others a foreign import at odds with Bai architectural traditions. Regardless of where one falls on that spectrum, it has undeniably reshaped the east-bank landscape and has become a fixture on Dali itineraries. It is best paired with a half-day exploring the east shore by car or e-bike, and is most enjoyable on weekdays or in shoulder seasons when crowds are thinner.
