The National Museum of Natural History is one of Beijing's most beloved museums, a long-established institution that brings the story of life on Earth vividly to life. Its halls are filled with remarkable specimens and fossils, from ancient elephant skulls to towering dinosaur skeletons, and it is especially famous for its dinosaur displays. For families with children, and for anyone curious about the natural world, it is one of the most engaging and enjoyable stops on a Beijing itinerary.

The permanent galleries trace the sweep of evolution and biodiversity, with sections on the origins of humankind, invertebrates, the plant world, ancient mammals and reptiles, and the wildlife of Africa. The standout attractions are the Dinosaur Park, where lifelike models and reconstructed scenes recreate the age of the dinosaurs, and the ancient reptile hall, packed with impressive skeletons of long-extinct creatures. Elsewhere you can see fossils of pioneering ancient plants, rare early human skeletons, and detailed models that make complex science accessible and exciting, particularly for younger visitors.

The museum also runs a hands-on discovery corner where children can read, draw, and assemble models, along with a small immersive cinema showing short educational films through the day, so there is plenty to keep families occupied. Admission is free but requires advance reservation, usually at least a day ahead, with timed entry, so plan your visit in advance and bring identification.
