Bone-and-wood inlay is a Ningbo decorative craft in which animal bone, shell and other materials are set into wood to form patterns, widely used on furniture, screens and architectural fittings.

La forma artística

Using raised, flush and other inlay techniques, slivers of bone and wood are pieced into landscapes, figures, flowers and birds, the crisp lines and sharp contrast lending refined splendor to plain wood.

Importancia cultural

In 2008 bone-and-wood inlay entered the second batch of national ICH, representing the "one inlay" in Ningbo's "three golds and an inlay" crafts.

Its works are seen mainly at Ningbo's local museums and craft-transmission institutions.
