The Nine Horses Fresco Hill is one of the most famous landmarks on the entire Li River, a towering cliff face whose streaked and mottled rock is said to reveal the shapes of nine horses to viewers with a sharp enough eye. Sitting on the west bank of the river between Xingping and Yangshuo, it is one of the most photographed natural features in southern China and a regular highlight of every Li River cruise and bamboo-raft trip through the region.

The cliff is a sheer wall of limestone whose face has been patterned by millennia of water staining and mineral leaching, leaving dark and light streaks that resemble brushwork. The traditional challenge for visitors is to count the horses hidden in the pattern, with the folk saying that only the most perceptive observers can make out all nine. Historians have noted that the emperors and poets who traveled the Li River used to compete to spot the largest number of horses, and the game is still played by tourists on the cruise boats and bamboo rafts that pass by today.

The hill is best viewed from the water rather than the road, which is why it features so prominently in Li River itineraries. Cruise boats coming downstream from Guilin slow as they pass the cliff, with bilingual announcements pointing out the most widely recognized horse shapes, and bamboo rafts out of Xingping regularly pull in at the bank opposite the cliff so passengers can photograph it and try their eye at the count. The reflections of the cliff in the river add a second, mirrored set of shapes that some visitors find even more evocative than the originals.

For independent travelers, the Nine Horses Fresco Hill is usually encountered as part of a river trip rather than as a standalone destination. The Xingping-to-Nine Horses bamboo-raft circuit is the most popular way to see it, with a stop near the cliff and a chance to photograph it from a quiet bend in the river. Photographers looking for a higher vantage point often climb nearby Xianggong Mountain at sunrise, which looks down on the cliff from the south.

The cliff sits within the Guilin Karst, a component of the South China Karst UNESCO World Heritage serial property, and it is one of the most distinctive single landmarks in a river valley whose every bend has been celebrated by Chinese painters and poets for more than a thousand years. Whether or not you can spot all nine horses, the cliff alone is worth the journey upstream from Xingping.
