Arroyo de las Nueve Curvas de Wuyishan

The Nine-Bend Stream is the river that defines the Wuyishan scenic landscape in Fujian province, winding through the heart of the Mount Wuyi UNESCO World Heritage Site and carving its way between the red danxia cliffs that make the Wuyi range one of the most distinctive landscapes in China. Rather than a single viewpoint, the stream is a continuous sequence of framed scenes, each bend opening onto new peaks, caves, rock inscriptions, and historic sites, and it has shaped the way visitors have experienced Wuyi for centuries.

The river takes its name from the nine distinct turns it makes as it flows through the scenic area. The First Bend lies downstream near the open plain of Qingchuan, framed by the great King Peak and the Canopy Tent Peak, with expansive views over the water. As the stream pushes on it enters increasingly dramatic gorges, and at the Second Bend the famous Jade Maiden Peak rises sheer from the water, facing King Peak across the current in one of the most celebrated views in Chinese landscape painting. Higher bends reveal further peaks, immortal-sage rocks, hidden academy sites, and cliff-side coffins from ancient inhabitants of the gorge.

The peaks and formations along the stream are not only visually striking but layered with cultural meaning. Over the centuries, scholars, poets, and Taoist priests built retreats, academies, and inscriptions along the banks, and the river became a setting for the Neo-Confucian philosophy that flourished at Mount Wuyi under Zhu Xi in the Song dynasty. Walking the bank-side trails or drifting the river on a bamboo raft, visitors move through a landscape that has been a touchstone of Chinese aesthetic and intellectual life for a thousand years.

The Nine-Bend Stream can be experienced in two complementary ways. The famous bamboo raft trip drifts downstream through the most scenic stretches and is the classic Wuyi experience, while a network of walking trails follows the banks and climbs to viewpoints such as Tianyou Peak that look down on the river from above. Most travelers make time for both. The area is the centerpiece of any Mount Wuyi visit, and whether you are drifting on the water or looking down from a summit, the stream is what makes Wuyishan unforgettable.
