Parque de la colina de la Carpa

Liyushan Park (Liyushan Gongyuan, "Carp Mountain Park") is one of the largest public parks in Urumqi, Xinjiang, occupying a long, narrow hill of the same name in the central part of the city. Unlike the more curated ornamental parks of older Chinese cities, Liyushan is an essentially natural hill retained as open green space, with few constructed amusements and an emphasis on walking, exercise, and informal recreation.

The hill takes its name from its outline, which from certain angles resembles a carp at rest, and its summit rises clearly above the surrounding urban grid. The park covers the full length of the ridge, with paved loop trails, fitness stations, and small rest pavilions distributed along the main routes. The eastern entrance opens onto a roughly five-thousand-square-meter garden plaza equipped with dozens of chess tables, table-tennis tables, exercise machines, and benches, which fills with local residents through the warmer months from early morning into the evening.

The planting on the hill reflects the challenges of urban greening in a desert-edge city. Stands of poplar, elm, and juniper provide shade along the main walks, with flower beds concentrated at the entrances and in the central plaza. From the higher points on the ridge, openings between the trees give framed views across the districts on either side, with the snow-capped ridge of Bogda Peak visible to the southeast on clear days.

For international travelers the park is a low-key, optional stop rather than a primary destination, but it offers one of the most authentic windows into everyday Urumqi life. The hilltop paths are used at all hours by walkers, joggers, and tai chi groups, and the eastern plaza is the social hub of the surrounding residential districts. Visitors who spend an hour here in the early morning or late afternoon will see the city at a pace and scale unavailable from a tour bus.

The park is also notable for what it does not contain. There are no entrance fees, no large-scale commercial installations, and no built entertainments beyond the fitness equipment. This deliberate restraint has preserved the hill as a public space in a city where most other green areas are developed as ticketed scenic zones, and it is the closest equivalent in Urumqi to a classic urban commons.
