Colina del Tigre (Tiger Hill)

Tiger Hill is a small, steeply sloped park on the northwest edge of old Suzhou, traditionally regarded as the most important historical site in the city. Although the hill rises only about thirty meters above the surrounding plain, it has been a sacred and ceremonial spot for more than two and a half thousand years. According to tradition it was originally the tomb of Helu, the Spring and Autumn period king who founded the Kingdom of Wu and made his capital here; later accounts say that three days after his burial a white tiger appeared on the mound, regarded as a guardian spirit, giving the hill its name.

The most famous structure on Tiger Hill is the Yunyan Pagoda, also called the Huqiu Pagoda, a seven-story brick tower built in the tenth century at the height of the Five Dynasties period. The pagoda began to lean noticeably within decades of its completion, and it now tilts more than two meters off vertical, earning it the nickname China's Leaning Tower of Pisa. Conservation work over the past century has stabilized the structure, and it remains the dominant silhouette on the Suzhou skyline, visible from many of the classical gardens in the old city.

Around the pagoda, the hilltop is dense with smaller historical sites. The Sword Pool is a narrow cleft in the rock where, according to legend, King Helu was buried along with three thousand of his prized swords; later dynasties' attempts to excavate the site have all failed to confirm the story. The Han dynasty Test Stone, where a thousand visitors are said to have sat to listen to lectures, and the Broken Beam Hall, a Tang dynasty hall whose main beam was in legend replaced overnight by a supernatural carpenter, add to the layers of folklore.

Lower down the hill, the site opens into a more formal Suzhou garden landscape of bamboo groves, penjing displays, koi ponds, and seasonal plantings. Tiger Hill has been a popular gathering place during the local spring botanical fairs for centuries, and the sloping path from the main gate up to the pagoda passes a sequence of pavilions, inscriptions, and old trees. For visitors who have seen the gardens first and want to understand the older, pre-garden layer of Suzhou's history, Tiger Hill is the most rewarding half-day outing in the city.
