Calle Shantang

Shantang Street is a mile-long historic canal street in northwest Suzhou, running from Chang Gate near the old city wall all the way out to Tiger Hill. Its layout, a stone-paved walking street on one side and a narrow canal on the other, crossed by a sequence of arched stone bridges, has remained essentially unchanged since the Tang dynasty, when the poet-official Bai Juyi, then serving as governor of Suzhou, ordered the canal dug as a public works project to connect the city to Tiger Hill. More than eleven hundred years later, the street he created is still the most atmospheric walking street in the city.

The street is divided into two distinct sections. The eastern end nearest Chang Gate has been restored and redeveloped as a pedestrian commercial street, with old merchant houses converted into tea houses, opera stages, fan and embroidery shops, and riverside restaurants. Red lanterns hang from the eaves, wooden signboards are lettered in calligraphy, and at dusk the whole stretch glows with reflected light off the canal. This is the most touristed stretch, but it remains the easiest place in Suzhou to encounter traditional crafts and Pingtan, the local story-singing musical genre, performed live in small teahouses.

The western section beyond the restored core is quieter and more residential, a still-living street of old houses, ancestral halls, and small shrines that leads eventually to the gates of Tiger Hill. This stretch is what Chinese travel writers call old Shantang, and it preserves more of the working canal-side life that the street has supported for centuries. Several historical sites line the route, including ancestral halls of important Suzhou families and the tomb of five Ming dynasty scholars killed during the political purges of the early seventeenth century.

For visitors, Shantang Street functions as both a destination in itself and the most pleasant walking route between two of Suzhou's main attractions, the old city and Tiger Hill. Canal boats depart from the Bai Juyi pier near the eastern end for evening cruises that travel the full length of the canal. For travelers who want to experience Suzhou's canal-side atmosphere without taking a day trip to a water town, Shantang Street at dusk offers the most accessible and visually rewarding version of that experience within the city itself.
