Museo de la Armada

The Navy Museum, formally the People's Liberation Army Navy Museum, is a military-history museum on Laiyang Road in the Shinan district of old Qingdao, occupying a waterfront site between Lu Xun Park and Xiaoqingdao Park that faces Zhanqiao Pier across the harbor. The museum is operated by the PLA Navy and is the principal institution documenting the history of China's modern naval forces.

The museum reopened in 2021 after a major reconstruction and expansion that tripled the scale of the original facility, which had first opened to the public in 1989. The renewed site combines indoor exhibition halls, an outdoor display area along the seawall, and a waterborne exhibit area that together cover both the land site and an adjacent stretch of harbor. Indoor galleries trace the institutional history of the PLA Navy from its founding through its modernization, with thematic exhibits on individual fleet formations, naval aviation, submarine forces, and the marine corps. The outdoor displays include decommissioned surface vessels, submarines, aircraft, and naval ordnance arranged along the piers.

The permanent exhibition, titled "Toward the Sea," was recognized with a national museum exhibition award and is organized around the chronology of the navy's institutional development. Exhibits include uniforms, historical photographs, navigational equipment, models of major vessel classes, and personal effects of prominent naval figures. Docents provide context on the technological and organizational milestones represented by the displays, although non-Chinese-speaking visitors should expect most interpretive content to be in Mandarin.

The museum's harbor-front location makes it an easy addition to a walking tour of the old town, combining naturally with Zhanqiao Pier, Lu Xun Park, and the Number One Bathing Beach. Identification is required for entry, and international visitors should bring their passports. The museum is most relevant for travelers with a specific interest in twentieth-century Chinese military history or in Cold War-era and post-Cold War naval technology, rather than as a general introduction to Qingdao.
