Isla Cijin

Cijin Island is a long, narrow barrier island sheltering the entrance to Kaohsiung Harbour, easily reachable by a short ferry ride from the city's harbour-side piers. Despite its proximity to central Kaohsiung, the island retains a distinct, slower character, with fishing-village streetscapes, beaches, and historic military architecture that contrast sharply with the dense urban grid across the water. For visitors, Cijin functions as both a day-trip destination and a natural counterpart to the city's harbour district.

The island's best-known landmarks cluster at its northern end, near the ferry terminal. The Cijin Lighthouse, with its distinctive octagonal tower, sits on the headland above the harbour entrance; its gallery offers a panoramic view over the shipping channel, the harbour, and the skyline of central Kaohsiung. Nearby, the Tianhou Temple (Mazu Temple), dedicated to the goddess of the sea, is one of the oldest religious sites in the area and remains the spiritual heart of the island's fishing community. The Coastal Park stretches along the ocean-facing side of the island, providing walking paths, landscaped open space, and views across the open water.

The strip between the ferry pier and the lighthouse forms the island's main tourist street, lined with seafood restaurants, snack stalls, and small shops. The selection of seafood is broad and notably fresh, drawn directly from the harbour, and a meal here is one of the classic Kaohsiung experiences. Bicycles and quadricycles are available for rent along the promenade, allowing visitors to cover the length of the island without a long walk, and the flat terrain makes the route suitable for families.

For international visitors, Cijin works best as a half-day trip, easily combined with a morning visit to the Pier-2 Art Center or the Former British Consulate on the city side of the harbour. The ferry crossing itself is part of the experience, offering a constantly changing view of the harbour and its shipping. Allow four to five hours for a relaxed visit, including a meal and a walk to the lighthouse. On weekends the island is busier; arrive early for a quieter experience.
