Sobre Aldea antigua de Xixinan

Xixinan is an ancient Huizhou village in the Huangshan region with origins stretching back to the Tang dynasty and a later period of prosperity under the Huizhou merchants of the Ming and Qing dynasties, when it grew into one of the more substantial settlements of the regional merchant elite. Set along the western edge of the broader Huizhou cultural area, the village retains a less-crowded and more genuinely lived-in character than the better-known villages on the standard tourist circuit, which has made it increasingly appealing to visitors looking for a quieter alternative.

The village preserves more than a hundred older buildings from the Ming and Qing periods, along with a number of venerable trees including a thousand-year-old ginkgo and centuries-old osmanthus and arhat trees that mark the main approaches and the key courtyards. Among the individual buildings, the Old House Pavilion and the Green Surrounding Pavilion are the most often cited, with their fine carved detailing and their careful siting within the broader landscape of water, gardens, and lanes that shapes the village's overall character.

Walking through the lanes gives a strong sense of the village as a continuing settlement rather than as a museum piece, with residents going about daily life alongside the older fabric and the steady but modest flow of visitors. The surrounding countryside, with its irrigation channels, kitchen gardens, and tree-lined approaches, frames the village in a way that reinforces the impression of a working rural community rather than a purely preserved heritage site.

For a Huangshan itinerary, Xixinan is best treated as a quieter, more contemplative stop for visitors with the time to move beyond the headline villages, particularly rewarding for travelers interested in vernacular architecture, old trees, or simply a slower, less crowded experience of a traditional Huizhou settlement. It pairs well with the broader western Huizhou circuit and offers a useful counterweight to the more intensively visited sites elsewhere in the region.
