Palacio Wanshou

Wanshou Palace, also known locally as the Jiangxi Guild Hall, stands on the sandbank just outside Fenghuang's east gate, facing the Tuo River with the green slopes of Qinglong Mountain behind it and the old rainbow bridge visible not far away. Historically built by merchants from Jiangxi province as a guild hall and place of worship, the complex takes its layout partly from the symbolism of its site, with its main gates aligned to face the bridge's arches, reflecting a wish for prosperity to flow into the hall the way the river flows beneath the bridge.

Over the course of its history, the palace has served far more functions than its original religious and mercantile purpose: at various points it has housed a currency-printing operation, a regional anti-bandit command post, a textile mill, a primary school, and a grain store, uses that took a toll on the original structure and left only the tall entrance gate and the main hall reasonably intact by the time restoration efforts began. Repeated restoration since has returned Wanshou Palace to its place among Fenghuang's most notable historic sites. The main hall houses a statue central to the Jiangxi merchant community's traditional worship, while surrounding halls and galleries are dedicated to various local deities, alongside spaces used today to exhibit works by the celebrated Fenghuang-born artist Huang Yongyu.

A visit typically covers the main gate, courtyards, and connecting halls in an hour or so, and the site's riverside setting near the rainbow bridge makes it easy to combine with a walk along the Tuo River and a stop at the bridge itself. For visitors interested in both Fenghuang's merchant history and its artistic heritage, Wanshou Palace offers more layered context than most single stops in the old town.
